Library Borrowing Conditions

General collections

Certificate / Associate Diploma / Diploma / Undergraduate students
A maximum of 40 items from general collections may be on loan at any one time, with the following limits at each campus library:

Suspension of borrowing entitlement until overdue item/s are returned.
'3 day loan' items
Library materials deemed to be in high demand, such as prescribed text books and recommended readings, are limited to a '3 day loan'.

Reserve collection
A maximum of 2 items from the Reserve collection may be on loan at any one time, for use in the Library only.

*Some items may be available for overnight loan, i.e. borrowed after 4.00pm and must be returned by 9.30am the following day (Monday - Friday) or by opening time on weekends.
Penalties for overdue item/s
The UB Library does not issue fines for overdue material; however, a demerit point system is in operation.
  1. Suspension of borrowing entitlement after days of grace until item/s returned.
  2. If item/s are not renewed or returned within the grace period, demerit points will accrue at the rate of 1 point, per item, per day from the due date.
  3. '3 day loan' items accrue 3 demerit points, per item, per day from the due date.
  4. Items from the Reserve collection accrue 1 demerit point, per item, per hour from the due time.
  5. A further period of suspension of borrowing entitlement is imposed when demerit points accumulate as follows:
    40 - 79 points
    80 or more points
    14 day suspension
    28 day suspension
    The suspension period starts from the day the last overdue items is returned.
Notices issued for overdue items from general collections
  1. First overdue notice on the third day, i.e. after 2 days of grace.
  2. Second overdue notice at 2 weeks overdue.
  3. Pre-invoice notice at 4 weeks overdue.
  4. When any item is 6 weeks overdue, it will be considered lost and an invoice will be issued for the replacement cost of the lost item plus a processing fee (GST inclusive).
Notices issued for overdue '3 day loan' items
  1. First overdue notice on the first day, i.e. no days of grace.
  2. Pre-invoice notice at 1 week overdue.
  3. When any item is 2 weeks overdue, it will be considered lost and an invoice will be issued for the replacement cost of the lost item plus a processing fee (GST inclusive).
Notices issued for overdue items from Reserve collection
  1. First overdue notice on the first day.
  2. Pre-invoice notice at 3 days overdue.
  3. When any item is 1 week overdue, it will be considered lost and an invoice will be issued for the replacement cost of the lost item plus a processing fee (GST inclusive).

NOTE: All outstanding debts to the Library will be advised to the Finance & Development Portfolio and may be reflected on a student's current University record.
Demerit points accumulated in one academic year will be cleared at the beginning of the following year, i.e. points will not be "carried over" from one year to the next.
