Information for Beginning Teachers
Reading and Literacy strategies

Librarians do have an Impact on children’s literature.
I was searching the net to find out what’s new with children’s literature and librarians from a school teaching point of view.
What did I find? You may ask….
I found 3 books about children and how important the role of the public or school librarian played in their lives.

Author: Carla Morris Illust: Brad Sneed
This is a picture book about a boy whose life is enriched by his daily visits to the Livingston Public Library and his relationship with the librarians there.
*This is a delightful book for 4-8 year olds. It would also make a great gift for your favourite librarian.

Author: Pat Mora Illust: Raul Colo’n
Tomás and the Library Lady is the story of a Mexican American boy named Tomás during one summer in Iowa and the impact that a kind librarian and a multitude of books had on his life.
* This is great a read-aloud story for children 6-10. It is also an excellent book for middle school age children who are independent readers.

Author & Illust: Jeanette Winter
With limited text and folk art-style illustrations, author and illustrator Jeanette Winter relates the dramatic true story of how one determined woman helped save the Basra Central Library's books during the invasion of Iraq. * Recommended for children 8-12

Reading Strategies used by Teachers.
Also there are children’s books about how important reading is and the strategies that teachers use. Example:
Question: What Is D.E.A.R. and What Does It Have to do With Beverly Cleary?
Answer: D.E.A.R. is the acronym for Drop Everything and Read. National Drop Everything and Read Day is an annual event, which is celebrated on April 12, the birthday of beloved children's book author Beverly Cleary. According to the official D.E.A.R. Web site, "National D.E.A.R. Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority."

Author: Beverly Cleary Illustrator: Alan Tiegreen
In this popular children's book by Beverly Cleary, Ramona Quimby, Age 8, Ramona's class celebrates National D.E.A.R. Day.
Beverly Cleary included a passage about the DEAR program in Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (pages 40-41) after she received numerous letters from readers who mentioned the great reading program they were doing in class. It seemed like something Ramona’s class would do, too, so she put it in the book."

Celebrate Children’s / Book Day
The subtitle of Book Fiesta! is Celebrate Children’s Day / Book Day - Celebremos El dia de los niños / El da de los libros, and this bilingual picture book is indeed a celebration. Book Fiesta! is a celebration of the joy of reading for children of all cultures and languages. This celebration culminates in Children’s Day / Book Day - El dia de los niños / El da de los libros (also known as Dia), an annual family literacy initiative. Dia has been celebrated in libraries, schools, homes, and other locations on or about April 30 since 1996

Author: Pat Mora Illustrator: Rafael López
An ever-changing multicultural group of children celebrates Children’s Day / Book Day - El dia de los niños / El da de los libros by telling and showing readers all of the different places they like to read books.

International Children’s Day
